The overall impression is of calm, grey, dampness as we arrive at the boatyard. We’re really here for Christine and Hoppy’s Hallowe’en party, but decided to go for a quick sail first. Everyone we meet tells us that there’s no wind, but the forecast I’ve seen is more encouraging. We decide to head out. It’s clearly a day for the yankee jib. Once out in Southampton Water, we hoist away and make gentle progress South, against wind and tide, fuelled by ‘Big Soup’ (which used to be bigger!). The wind picks up as we get out into the Solent and we’re going well, but it’s cold. We tack at the Southern edge of Brambles Bank and bear away. We are soon touching 5kts across the tide, heading home. In the light winds we try dropping the mainsail downwind, which turns out to be straightforward. At what point would it not be?

Then it’s slow progress against the ebb tide back up the river and across to Swanwick to refuel (78 litres). Suddenly there are boats everywhere, all heading the Elephant Boatyard. Are they all going to the same party? It turns out that most are on a separate rally, but ‘Sepia’, ‘East Breeze’ and ‘Jan Mayen’ are there to join us. It’s low tide and we touch the mud a boat length from our berth. A little more power and we’re alongside.

The evening is fancy dress and games in the dark. Everyone enjoys themselves, even if the camera’s not up to the job.

On Sunday morning Tim & Lyn provide a fine cooked breakfast to send us all on our way in style.
